Chapter 1 — Scope of Use & Dependencies

I. Scope of Use

• Experiment/observation types: Laboratory (Lab), Field, Remote; modes include timing, imaging, spectral, mixed.
• Operating regime: zero-order paraxial, small-angle, slowly varying medium; within coherence windows T_coh/L_coh/B_coh such that |∇ n_eff|·L_coh ≪ 1.
• Path-quantity requirement: whenever arrival time or phase is involved, the text must explicitly declare gamma(ell) and measure d ell, and the data/metadata must record delta_form ∈ {general, factored}.
• Out-of-scope: strong nonlinearity/dispersion/full-wave coupling; when |θ| > θ_max or p_dim < 1, switch to [Restricted] mode.

II. Scenario Matrix

Unified arrival-time form: T_arr = ( ∫ ( n_eff / c_ref ) d ell ) = ( 1 / c_ref ) * ( ∫ n_eff d ell ); phase: Phi = ( 2π / λ_ref ) * ( ∫ n_eff d ell ).

• Dimensional closure: p_dim = 1.0; verify via I70-dim_check and include check_dim_report.json.
• Sync & freshness: clock_state=locked, |ts_start − calib.timestamp| ≤ τ_calib; if violated, trigger I61-sync_lock / recalibrate.
• Symbols & conflict names: bare c, T, n are forbidden; use c_ref, specific quantity name (e.g., T_fil), and n_eff (or n); do not mix T_fil with T_trans, or n with n_eff.
• Sampling & windows: f_s ≥ 2 f_max, Δell ≤ Δell_max; declare window function and bands fully.

V. Boundaries & Restricted Mode

• Triggers: |θ| > θ_max, |∇ n_eff|·L_coh ≮≪ 1, p_dim < 1, expired τ_calib, or lost sync.
• Actions: switch to full-wave/numerical propagation or degraded strategy; tag results/figures with [Restricted]; provide qualitative trends only.
