Chapter 0 — Preface & User Guide
I. Purpose & Scope
- Define a unified specification for protocol-level error-source identification, propagation, and uncertainty reporting to support runtime validation, publication, and comparative scoring.
- Applicable to timing / imaging / spectral / mixed; paraxial/small-angle, slowly varying medium within coherence windows; aligned with PTN Template v1.0 and Experimental Protocol Card Template v1.0.
- Not applicable: strong nonlinearity/dispersion/full-wave coupling beyond coherence windows (enter [Restricted] and publish qualitative conclusions only).
II. Audience & Applicability
- Audience: experiment/observation leads, metrology & data governance, review & release owners.
- Scope: error budgets and interval reporting for T_arr, Phi, ε_flux, ΔM, Q_res, and related metrics.
- Preconditions: clock_state = locked, |ts_start − calib.timestamp| ≤ τ_calib, p_dim = 1.0, len(path) ≥ 2.
III. Citations & Versioning
- Fixed syntax: See "<Volume> vX.Y" <Chapter> <Anchor>; prioritize P/S/M/I.
- Stability line: public releases cite v1.* only; if v0.* appears, mark “draft / non-committal” prominently in text.
- Keep text and data-side see[]/references[] consistent, anchor coverage ≥ 90%, no external links or aliases.
IV. Normative Forms (paste-ready)
- Arrival time (two equivalent forms):
T_arr = ( 1 / c_ref ) * ( ∫ n_eff d ell )
T_arr = ( ∫ ( n_eff / c_ref ) d ell ) - Phase accumulation:
Phi = ( 2π / λ_ref ) * ( ∫ n_eff d ell ) - Requirements: explicitly show path gamma(ell) and measure d ell in text, and record delta_form ∈ {general, factored} in data/metadata; n_eff dimensionless; c_ref in m/s; T_arr in s; Phi in rad.
- Dimensional closure: include check_dim_report.json in exports.
V. Structure & Deliverables
- Chapter skeleton: Purpose & Scope → Inputs & Preconditions → Methods & Conventions (Delta/MC/Bootstrap) → Results & Checks → Compliance & Stops → Outputs & Exports → Citations.
- Required machine-readable outputs: error_budget.csv, uncertainty.md, check_dim_report.json, and (if applicable) uncertainty.yaml.
- Table convention: each error source reported as source, symbol, unit, type(A/B), estimate, distribution, correlation, note, see[].
VI. Dependencies & Cross-References
- Metrology & control equations: See "EFT.WP.Core.Metrology v1.0" check_dim; See "EFT.WP.Core.Equations v1.1" Ch.2 S20-1/S21-2.
- Protocol alignment: See "PTN Template v1.0" Ch.7/Ch.9/Ch.11; See "Experimental Protocol Card Template v1.0" Ch.5/Ch.7/Ch.9/Ch.11.
- Data contract: See "EFT.WP.Core.DataSpec v1.0" TARR (fields, units, exports).
VII. Pre-Flight Checklist
- Text and data see[]/references[] use “volume + version + anchor”, anchor coverage ≥ 90%.
- Path expressions explicitly show gamma(ell) and d ell; delta_form recorded; len(path) ≥ 2.
- p_dim = 1.0, clock_state = locked, |ts_start − calib.timestamp| ≤ τ_calib.
- Arrival/phase use the unified forms; error_budget.csv / uncertainty.md / check_dim_report.json are ready.
- Bare c, T, n are forbidden; use c_ref, specific quantity name (e.g., T_arr), and n_eff (or n with explicit unit); do not mix T_fil/T_trans or n/n_eff.
- If [Restricted], publish qualitative intervals and diagnostics only, and append [Restricted] to all figure titles.
